Family Update

Dear Families,

And just like that, it’s April! On April Fool’s Day, students were instructed to turn on their Chromebooks using the “new, voice-activated” option using a robot voice.  Since it was an April Fool’s joke, it didn’t work! On Wednesday, our grade 3 Superstars shined today during MCAS testing!  We are all so proud of their hard work and effort today for both sessions.  Our attendance the first week in April has been strong.  Establishing a habit of daily school attendance is crucial for children’s development. I appreciate your commitment to ensuring our students are here every day. Thank you for your support!  To encourage attendance the week before vacation, we are having April Showers Bring Math Powers Spirit Week!  Please click on this link to view the flyers:  April Showers Bring Math Powers Spirit Week Flyers in English, Spanish, and Portuguese

Another tool to improve attendance- the Walnut Square Alphabet Calendar:  Sprinting Through Spring is here! Beginning on Wednesday, May 7th, our alphabet calendar offers an exciting and engaging way to build connections within the school community while emphasizing mental health awareness and promoting fun. Each day is thoughtfully designed with activities that encourage participation, fostering a sense of belonging among students, teachers, and families.  By incorporating themes that focus on mindfulness, kindness, and self-expression, such as “Mindful Moments Day” and “Kindness Day,” the calendar creates a supportive environment where students can openly discuss feelings and experiences. This approach not only raises awareness about mental health but also equips students with important social-emotional skills that contribute to their overall well-being.  The fun, themed days—like Crazy Hair Day, Pajama Day, and Ice Cold Treat Day—stimulate excitement and enthusiasm for attending school. Engaging, hands-on activities encourage students to express themselves creatively and socially, making school a place where they want to be. This not only boosts attendance but also enhances engagement in learning. As students connect with one another through shared laughter and enjoyment, they develop friendships that can alleviate stress and promote a positive school climate.  Please click on one of the links below to view the flyer.

In PTO news, the Walnut Square PTO is hosting an art show on Monday, April 14th from 5:30-7:00 at 43 Washington St.  Please click here or see below for the details.  There is also a PTO meeting and Site Council meeting scheduled on Monday, April 7th.  Please click here to view the PTO agenda and click here to view the Site Council Agenda.

I’m also excited for our next Title I Event:  Spring Nature Walk Around Lake Pentucket with Pentucket Lake School on Thursday, April 17, 2025  starting at 6:30 pm.  Join us for an evening hike along the Lake Pentucket trail while enjoying the beautiful sunset (weather permitting). This is a wonderful opportunity for families from Walnut Square and Pentucket to come together. After the hike, participants will receive information and tips for enjoying nature as a family. Please note that this event will be held rain or shine, so appropriate clothing and footwear are highly recommended! The trail is 1.1 miles long, and bicycles and strollers are not suitable as it is a hiking trail. Kindly leave pets at home.   Sign up for the Title 1 Nature Walk Around Lake Pentucket Here:  https://forms.gle/o2zKHfpFUH3HqwDv5

As the spring season gets busy, reading every night with your child is very important.    It helps improve their vocabulary, comprehension skills, and overall academic performance. Additionally, reading fosters a love of literature and encourages critical thinking.  To support this essential habit, I invite all Superstars to complete the Superstar Book Review. By filling out this log, you will contribute to a wonderful resource for our school community that will inspire others to read!  Please use the following link to complete the form after reading each book: https://forms.gle/iDTbdMb6mkwBkmAu6. We currently have 66 book recommendations available to help you choose engaging stories. Thank you for participating and promoting the love of reading!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Jen Rubera

Shine Bright Reader Tips from Ms. Dullea

In Kindergarten students are getting ready to show all they have learned about how authors write stories by using a story map to help them organize their thoughts to write their own narrative story. What are feelings? This is the question students in first grade have been exploring through the book titled Feelings and sharing their thoughts through discussions and writing. Second graders have been hard at work identifying story elements using the text John Henry: An American Legend. Opinion writing has been the focus of third grade writing. They have been learning how to write multiple-paragraph essays that include text evidence to support their opinion. Ask your child to tell you about all the amazing information and tasks they have been creating here at school.
