Veterans Day

“This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave. ”

– Elmer Davis

Dear Families,

As we approach Veterans Day tomorrow, Tuesday, November 11th, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the brave men and women who have served our country.  Please remember that there will be no school tomorrow in observance of Veterans Day.  Their sacrifices and dedication allow us to enjoy the freedoms we cherish every day.  Let us take this opportunity to honor our veterans and acknowledge the important role they play in safeguarding our freedoms.  Veterans Day is a significant opportunity to teach our students about service, courage, and gratitude for the men and women who have dedicated themselves to protecting our nation.  To our Walnut Square Veterans, thank you for your service.

To help deepen your child’s understanding of Veterans Day and various aspects of military service, I highly recommend reading books together as a family.  I have compiled a list of picture books that touch upon themes of service, heroism, and life in a military family, keeping the K-3 age group (ages 5-9) in mind.  These books provide a wonderful, age-appropriate way to introduce this important holiday.  I  strongly recommend that parents review these titles before reading them with your child.  This allows you to introduce sensitive topics in a way that best suits your child’s maturity and emotional readiness.
